The PECUNIA Patient-Reported Outcome Measure-Mental Health Compendium (PECUNIA PROM-MH Compendium, v. 1.0, 4 Feb 2020) is a Microsoft Excel®-based electronic library of non-disease-specific PROMs used in mental health research. It provides metadata information about existing, publicly available generic PROMs suitable for use in (mental) health research and their applicability in multi-sectoral, multi-national and multi-person (economic) evaluations. The PECUNIA PROM-MH Compendium v. 1.0 was developed by the Department of Health Economics, Center for Public Health, Medical University of Vienna as part of the Horizon 2020 research project PECUNIA (ProgrammE in Costing, resource use measurement and outcome valuation for Use in multi-sectoral National and International health economic evaluAtions - GA No 779292). In terms of outcome assessment, the project aimed for harmonisation in multi-national, multi-sectoral and (where relevant) multi-person economic evaluations by addressing cross-country variations in utility measurement and harmonising methods for broader wellbeing measurement, among others.
The methodology of deriving PROMs and their metadata included in the PROM-MH Compendium (v.1.0) followed a two-step process. Firstly, a systematic literature review was conducted on 4 February 2020 in five bibliographic databases from January 2008 until February 2020 to identify relevant non-disease-specific PROMs used in mental health research for the measurement of quality of life/wellbeing, or recovery. Secondly, secondary searches in PubMed and Google were conducted to acquire the most up-to-date PROM metadata. Metadata information was searched in scientific articles, instrument manuals, and web-based sources (e.g. questionnaire websites).
The PECUNIA PROM-MH Compendium v. 1.0 consists of 204 unique instruments (PROMs) alongside their comprehensive metadata and is browsable according to main PROM characteristics. The tab “PROMs (v. 1.0, 4 Feb 2020)” lists instruments in alphabetical order. The “Browse by Category (v. 1.0, 4 Feb 2020)” tab redirects users to the list of PROMs with desired characteristics. Each PROM identified in the systematic literature review (as of 4 Feb 2020) is described in detail in the separate worksheets.
Information about each instrument is organised in five sections:
The PECUNIA PROM-MH Compendium update (v. 1.1), compiled in November 2025, incorporates findings from a systematic literature review update conducted on 21 September 2023, which covered the period from February 2020 to September 2023. The review identified 42 additional PROMs as of 21 September 2023, which are listed in the "PROMs update (v.1.1)" tab. The update also included specific information on instruments available in German, which is available in the new "German versions" tab.
